It is a prodrug that undergoes rapid and extensive metabolism in vivo to form the active metabolite clobetasol 17-propionate. The chemical stability of clobetasone 17-butyrate allows it to be stored at room temperature, which makes it an ideal candidate for use in developing countries. Clobetasone 17-butyrate has been shown to exhibit antiinflammatory activity, with statistically significant differences when compared to placebo. This drug has been shown to be effective against symptoms of bowel disease in both humans and animals. Clobetasone 17-butyrate can also be used as an analytical reagent because it binds with benzalkonium chloride and can be used for wastewater treatment.
