Gemfibrozil is a chemical inhibitor that inhibits the response element to the transcription factor PPAR-α. It has been shown to decrease cardiac effects such as increased heart rate, stroke volume, and cardiac output. Gemfibrozil has been used for wastewater treatment and has been found to be an analytical method for determining the concentration of other drugs in urine. The ecological effects of gemfibrozil are not well understood, but it is known that it can cause adverse effects on locomotor activity in animals. Gemfibrozil is a potent inducer of liver enzymes and may interact with other drugs by increasing their concentration time curve. This drug also has oral hypoglycemic properties, which lowers the blood glucose level by stimulating insulin production.
