Cucurbitacin IIA is a cucurbitane-type triterpene glycoside. It is one of the major cucurbitacin derivatives that can be isolated from Oroxylum indicum and other plants belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae. Cucurbitacin IIA exerts its biological activity by binding to epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor and activating intracellular signaling pathways that lead to apoptosis. It also inhibits the production of survivin, a protein that protects cells from undergoing apoptosis, which leads to significant cytotoxicity in cancer cells.
