R-equol is a natural compound that has been found in soy products. The effects of R-equol are related to its ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by binding to their estrogen receptors and inducing apoptosis. Research has shown that R-equol may be able to induce mitochondrial membrane potential and increase cytosolic Ca2+ levels in vitro, which have physiological effects on the body. R-equol also binds to the equol receptor, which is activated by estradiol and is involved in drug transport and pharmacological activity. In vivo studies have shown that R-equol can reduce tumor size and metastasis formation.
