Description

Methyl arachidate is a fatty acid that is used as a precursor in the production of biodiesel. It can be synthesized by reacting methyl eicosanoate with methanol in the presence of a palladium catalyst and a base. Methyl arachidate can be isolated from natural sources such as animal fats and plant oils, but it is more commonly manufactured industrially. This compound has been shown to be a sensitive index for determining the quality of photosynthetic pigments and has been used as an intermediate in the preparation of other compounds such as polymers and pharmaceuticals. Methyl arachidate is also found in human tissue lipids, where it binds with benzyl groups to form polymer films. Methyl arachidate is typically used commercially because it can be converted into fatty esters, which are important for manufacturing products like cosmetics, detergents, and lubricants.
