• Description: Beta-sitosterol is a plant sterol that is found in soybeans, vegetables, and nuts. It has shown to have antiinflammatory activity by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. Beta-sitosterol also binds to the enzyme 5-alpha reductase and inhibits its activity, which leads to lower levels of dihydrotestosterone in the prostate. Beta-sitosterol can be used as an alternative treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Beta-sitosterol has been shown to inhibit methyltransferase and polymerase activities. This inhibition leads to decreased production of proinflammatory molecules such as cytokines and nitric oxide synthase. It also decreases the expression of inflammatory genes such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa) and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2). The compound also has metal chelate properties and a high affinity for water vapor, which may be due to its ability to bind with p-hydroxyben
