Palmitic-d31 acid is a phospholipid that belongs to the group of acyl chains with a fatty acid at the head. Palmitic-d31 acid is hydrophobic, which makes it suitable for use in lipoproteins and cell membranes. Palmitic-d31 acid has been used to study the interactions between lipids and membrane proteins by measuring changes in membrane thickness, as well as how these interactions affect sodium channels. The constant of palmitic-d31 acid has been determined to be 1.056x10^-3 cm/sec and its nmr spectra are consistent with a monolayer in aqueous solution. Palmitic-d31 acid can be deuterated, making it useful for determining lipid orientation.
