Mesotrione è un erbicida selettivo utilizzato principalmente per controllare le erbe infestanti a foglia larga e alcune graminacee in colture come il mais. Appartiene alla classe degli erbicidi triketone e funziona inibendo l'enzima 4-idrossifenilpiruvato dioxygenase (HPPD), che è cruciale per la biosintesi dei carotenoidi nelle piante. Questa inibizione porta all'accumulo di intermediari tossici, che alla fine porta alla morte della pianta. Mesotrione è caratterizzato dalla sua azione sistemica, che consente di essere assorbito sia attraverso il fogliame che attraverso le radici.
