U 50488 hydrochloride is a stereoisomer of the drug U 50488, which is an opioid receptor agonist. It is an optical isomer of the drug U 50488 and has been shown to be more potent and efficacious than its racemic counterpart. The drug binds to the kappa-opioid receptor in the brain and causes regression of chronic pain by suppressing glutamate release in the spinal cord. This drug has been administered to humans in a placebo-controlled, double-blind study and was found to be safe and effective for treatment of chronic pain.
