CAS:Ruthenium(III) chloride hydrate is a ruthenium complex that is used as a catalyst. It has shown to be an effective antimicrobial agent, specifically against Gram-positive bacteria. Ruthenium(III) chloride hydrate reacts with the oxygen in water to form hydrogen peroxide and the hydroxyl radical, which are both powerful oxidants that can kill microorganisms. The oxidation of the metal by water is catalyzed by an enzyme called peroxidase or by an inorganic acid such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. Ruthenium(III) chloride hydrate also undergoes a reaction mechanism involving intramolecular hydrogen transfer from one molecule to another.
