Isopropil β-D-tiogalattopiranoside (IPTG) è un composto sintetico comunemente usato in biologia molecolare come induttore dell'espressione genica. È un galattoside, specificamente un tiogalattoside, il che significa che contiene un atomo di zolfo al posto dell'ossigeno nella parte di galattosio. L'IPTG è strutturalmente simile al lattosio ed è riconosciuto dal sistema dell'operone lac nei batteri, in particolare Escherichia coli, dove si lega al repressore lac, portando all'attivazione dei geni sotto il controllo del promotore lac.
