Ethyl 4,4,4-Trifluoroacetoacetate is a compound that is used to synthesize enantiopure compounds. It is prepared by the reaction of p-nitrophenyl phosphate with trifluoroacetic acid in the presence of ethylene diamine and sodium carbonate. The first step in the synthesis is the formation of a hemiacetal from the p-nitrophenyl phosphate and ethylene diamine. This hemiacetal reacts with an amine to form a secondary aminium salt. The second step involves hydrolysis of this aminium salt with sodium carbonate to produce an ester product and ammonium chloride.
