8,9-Dehydroestrone is a steroidal sex hormone that is synthesized in the ovaries and adrenal glands. It is a naturally occurring metabolite of estradiol and estrone sulfate. 8,9-Dehydroestrone has been shown to have neuroprotective effects in rat liver microsomes. This effect may be due to its ability to inhibit neuronal death by blocking the activation of caspase-3, an enzyme involved in apoptosis. 8,9-Dehydroestrone also has a role as an estrogen conjugate that can be used for pharmaceutical preparations in women.
