Applications Semicarbazide Hydrochloride is a metabolite of Nitrofuran (N493840), a minor antimicrobial used in veterinary medicine affecting semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO) activity (1). Semicarbazide may be found in from nitrofuran residues in honey extracts (2) as well as milk from dairy cows (3). CAS:Semicarbazide hydrochloride (SCH) is a pyrazole compound that has been used as an antimicrobial agent. It is also a potent inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which is involved in the transmission of nerve impulses to muscles. SCH has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth in vitro and in vivo by interfering with DNA replication and protein synthesis. SCH’s inhibitory properties have been demonstrated using nitrogen atoms as analytical markers. The semicarbazide moiety can be removed from SCH by treatment with anhydrous sodium hydroxide, which leaves the reactive group intact.
