Beta-sitosterol is a plant sterol that is found in soybeans, vegetables, and nuts. It has shown to have antiinflammatory activity by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. Beta-sitosterol also binds to the enzyme 5-alpha reductase and inhibits its activity, which leads to lower levels of dihydrotestosterone in the prostate. Beta-sitosterol can be used as an alternative treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Beta-sitosterol has been shown to inhibit methyltransferase and polymerase activities.
