Descrizione:
Acido ftalico, con il numero CAS 88-99-3, è un composto organico cristallino e incolore che appartiene alla classe degli acidi dicarbossilici. È caratterizzato dai suoi due gruppi funzionali di acido carbossilico (-COOH) attaccati a un anello benzenico, il che contribuisce alla sua natura aromatica. Acido ftalico è solubile in acqua, particolarmente a temperature elevate, ed è anche solubile in solventi organici come etanolo ed etere. Ha un punto di fusione che tipicamente rientra in un intervallo moderato, e il suo punto di ebollizione è relativamente alto a causa della presenza di forti forze intermolecolari. Acido ftalico è utilizzato principalmente nella produzione di plastificanti, in particolare esteri di ftalato, che migliorano la flessibilità e la durabilità delle materie plastiche. Inoltre, funge da precursore nella sintesi di vari coloranti, pigmenti e resine. Sebbene Acido ftalico stesso sia considerato a bassa tossicità, i suoi derivati, in particolare alcuni esteri di ftalato, hanno sollevato preoccupazioni ambientali e sanitarie, portando a un controllo normativo in varie applicazioni.
