The crystal structure of the product was determined by x-ray crystallography, and the mechanism for this reaction was proposed to be a transfer of methyl groups from Cuban-1-ylmethanol to an oxygen atom on the substrate. Cuban-1-ylmethanol can be used as a probe for methane monooxygenase (MMO) activity, yielding yields of up to 50%.
