1,8-Naphthosultone is a compound that belongs to the class of peptide hormones. It has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of two proteolytic enzymes, including cathepsin L and elastase, by binding to their active sites in human serum. The intramolecular hydrogen bonds in 1,8-naphthosultone are critical for its anti-inflammatory properties. This compound may also be used as an inhibitor in organic acid processes. A synthetic process was developed to produce 1,8-naphthosultone using an inorganic acid as a starting material. X-ray crystal structures were obtained for two synthetic variants of 1,8-naphthosultone that were prepared using different methods of preparation: one from an asymmetric synthesis and the other from a symmetric synthesis.
