Tetrakis(2-ethylhexyl) orthosilicate is a non-polar molecule that has been used in atomic force microscopy. It consists of four ethoxy groups attached to the silicon at the corners of an octahedron. The probe is tethered to a solid substrate and moves freely over a surface without any friction. The probe is able to sense the presence of atoms on the surface as it scans across it, generating a profile that can be used for molecular imaging.
