Isopromethazine is a clinical drug and a member of the class of pharmaceutical preparations that depress the central nervous system. It has been used as a cough suppressant, but also has other uses in the treatment of degenerative diseases, chronic bronchitis, and other conditions. Isopromethazine is a potent inhibitor of protein synthesis in humans, which may be due to its ability to inhibit specific enzymes such as tryptophan hydroxylase and tyrosine hydroxylase. This drug also inhibits the activity of human serum albumin, which may be due to its ability to bind to nitrogen atoms in this protein. Isopromethazine also has an effect on radiation-induced tissue injury.
