Gentianine is a terpene that has been shown in vitro to inhibit the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) by binding to the receptor molecule for PGE2. It also inhibits bcr-abl kinase activity, which is involved in the development of leukemia. Gentianine has been used as an experimental agent in patients with papillary muscle dysfunction. In a clinical trial, low doses of gentianine were found to be safe and effective in reducing symptoms of infectious diseases caused by bacteria.
