This reduction process is thought to be catalyzed by hydrochloric acid, which aids in deprotonating a phenyl ring. The resulting anion can then bind to sodium ions, forming an amide bond. n-Phenylmaleamic acid has been shown to be toxic to the human liver and kidneys, although it does not have carcinogenic properties. n-Phenylmaleamic acid also has kinetic data available for its reaction with calcium stearate and anhydrous sodium, which may be helpful in determining the activation energies of this reaction.
