Triheptanoin is a tri-substituted fatty acid that has been shown to have beneficial effects on mitochondrial dysfunction. Triheptanoin is synthesized by the liver and is found in high concentrations in the cardiac and hepatic tissue, where it can be used as a diagnostic for metabolic disorders. Triheptanoin has been shown to improve mitochondrial functions, including mitochondrial membrane potential and fatty acid oxidation, which are linked to energy metabolism in cells.
