Heptadecanal is a fatty acid that is found in biofuel production and wastewater treatment. It has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of malonic acid-producing bacteria, such as Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, when used at a concentration of 1.5 mM. Heptadecanal has also been shown to be an analytical reagent for determination of fatty acids in the chemical analysis of oils, fats, and waxes by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Heptadecanal reacts with acyl chains of lipids in the cell membrane to produce reactive radicals that can react with other molecules. This reaction may lead to lipid peroxidation and cell death. The synergistic interaction between heptadecanal and malonic acid was studied by testing the effects on carcinoma cell lines.
