1-Ethyl-1-phenylhydrazine (1EPH) is a conformationally constrained imino hydrazine that is mutagenic, but not carcinogenic. 1EPH has been shown to be useful for the synthesis of phenylhydrazines, including 2-methylphenylhydrazine, which is used as a feedstock in the production of 2-thiopheneacetic acid. The reaction between 1EPH and thiourea produces 1-(2-methylphenyl)-3-(2-pyridinyl)urea, which can be converted to 2-aminothiophene with sodium methoxide. The dihedral angle of 1EPH has been shown to affect its mutagenicity and functional group reactivity. Furthermore, the presence of halides on the nitrogen atom increases its mutagenicity.
