1-(4-Benzylphenyl)ethanone is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of electron donors. It reacts with chlorides, such as thionyl chloride and ethchloride, in the presence of a base to produce an alkyl chloride. The reaction proceeds by way of an electrophilic addition of the chloroalkane to the α, β-unsaturated carbonyl compound followed by elimination of HCl. 1-(4-Benzylphenyl)ethanone is also used for the preparation of triarylbismuth and other organometallic compounds. This chemical has been shown to be a useful analytical tool for determining trace amounts of additives found in many products including food and pharmaceuticals.
