2-Chloro-4,6-dinitrophenol (2C6DNP) is a quinone that is used to treat wastewater. 2C6DNP is activated by an electron to form a reactive oxygen species that can be used as a disinfectant. In addition, 2C6DNP has been shown to inhibit the growth of wild-type strains of E. coli and S. typhimurium in the presence of sodium carbonate and chloride ions. The mechanism by which 2C6DNP inhibits bacterial growth may be due to its ability to react with the hydroxy group on DNA bases, forming adducts that inhibit DNA synthesis.
