2-Bromo-1-(2,5-dihydroxyphenyl)ethanone is an aryl ketone that has been used to prepare a number of pharmaceuticals. It is a major metabolite of the antibiotic azithromycin and has shown in vivo antitumor activity. The compound can be synthesized by reacting 2,5-dihydroxybenzaldehyde with bromine. 2-Bromo-1-(2,5-dihydroxyphenyl)ethanone has also been found to have antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus spp. and may be used as an analytical reagent to stabilize carboxylic acids.
