Maleic acid disodium hydrate is a 3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid and sodium salt. It is used as a preservative in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and foods. Maleic acid disodium hydrate inhibits the production of lysozyme and other enzymes by binding to the active site of the enzyme's molecule. Maleic acid disodium hydrate also has antioxidant properties that protect against oxidative damage from free radicals. The main health effects from maleic acid disodium hydrate exposure are chronic irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, throat, and lungs; an increase in blood pressure; kidney problems; and damage to liver cells. Maleic acid disodium hydrate is soluble in water at high concentrations but insoluble in anhydrous sodium butanol or butanol alone.
