Tert-butyldichlorophosphine is a diphosphine that has been used in the synthesis of a number of polyatomic molecules. It can be used to form pentane from magnesium and chloroform, as well as carbon tetrachloride from magnesium and pentane. Tert-butyldichlorophosphine has also been shown to react with aryl chlorides to produce catalytic asymmetric reactions for the synthesis of chiral compounds. This compound is also useful for magnetic resonance spectroscopy because it can be used to form complexes with transition metals such as palladium, which can be detected by the NMR technique.
