Benzyl 6-hydroxyhexanoate (BHHA) is a synthetic compound that has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of the mitochondrial membrane potential in human cervical cancer cells. BHHA inhibits the proliferation of these cells without affecting the viability of normal human cells. This compound has also been shown to inhibit the growth and induce apoptosis in other cancer cell lines, such as those from breast and prostate cancer. BHHA is converted into an aglycon by esterases and conjugated with choline or other biomolecules, which are then transported across cellular membranes. The choline-conjugated form of BHHA can be used as a substrate for synthesizing bioconjugates in stepwise fashion.
