(2-Cyano-5-methylphenyl)boronic acid is an electron donor that can be used for the reduction of oxidized compounds. It has been shown to have a redox potential of ˜0.7 V vs. SHE and a pKa of ˜6.2. This compound inhibits the tyrosine kinase activity in chronic kidney disease by binding to the active site on the enzyme, preventing ATP hydrolysis and subsequent phosphorylation of substrates. The molecule has also been immobilized on various supports and shown to inhibit mitochondrial function in knockout mice with impaired oxidative phosphorylation. The dihedral angle between the two boron atoms is ˜90°, while the primary carbon chain has a length of ˜1.5 Å with a single hydrogen bond to one of the boron atoms, which is further stabilized by a carbonyl group at position 2, and a hydroxyl group at position 5. Structural
