Dibenzothiophene 5-oxide is a dibenzothiophene derivative that is used in wastewater treatment. It reacts with picolinic acid or malonic acid to form a sulfone, which is then converted by an activated nitrogen atom to a nucleotide monophosphate. Dibenzothiophene 5-oxide has been shown to be effective against malignant cells of the breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231. This compound inhibits the binding of the enzyme polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by hydrogen bonding interactions, leading to inhibition of DNA synthesis and subsequent cell death.
