Diphenyl ether acetates are a class of pharmaceutical preparations that have been used in the treatment of cardiac conditions. Acetylation is a chemical reaction that adds an acetyl group to a molecule, typically with the loss of water and the gain of one proton. Diphenyl ether acetates can be synthesized by reacting diphenyl ethers with acetic anhydride in the presence of a base. The product is purified by recrystallization or fractional distillation. Diphenyl ether acetates are natural compounds that have been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against cells in culture, particularly those from the heart. In addition, diphenyl ether acetates can inhibit P-450 enzymes, which are involved in lipid metabolism and cholesterol synthesis. This class of compounds also has an inhibitory effect on glyoxylate pathway enzymes and cellular processes involving ATP production.
