Vanilpyruvic acid is a phenolic compound that is found in urine samples of patients with inflammatory disease. Vanilpyruvic acid can be used as a diagnostic tool for the identification of these diseases in patients. The hydroxyl group on vanilpyruvic acid reacts with chromatography columns to produce an ion with a positive charge. This ion can be identified using chemiluminescence methods and then quantified using spectrophotometry. Vanilpyruvic acid has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which are due to its ability to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory metabolites such as dopamine and acetate extract.
