2-Hydroxyphenylthiourea (HPTU) is a type of chemosensor that is used to detect anions, such as formate, sulfate, and nitrate. This compound reacts with the anion to produce a chromophore that can be detected by light. The reaction time of HPTU depends on the concentration of the anion and the pH. HPTU has been used in wastewater treatment plants to monitor for ammonia and nitrite concentrations.
