1-Allyl-2-methylbenzene is an organic solvent used in the manufacture of polymers. It has a high water-absorbing property and can be used as a cross-linking agent for polymerization, as well as a particle for granulation. 1-Allyl-2-methylbenzene is also used to produce polymers that have a high molecular weight, which are often used in the production of polyester fibers. 1-Allyl-2-methylbenzene can also be used as a catalyst when polymerizing ethylene oxide and propylene oxide with boron trifluoride etherate. This chemical can be added to deionized water and heated until it becomes liquid, forming a viscous solution, or it can be mixed with other solvents such as tetrahydrofuran and dioxane to form an emulsion.
