4-Hydroxyantipyrine is a metabolite of antipyrine. It is formed in the liver and excreted in the urine. 4-Hydroxyantipyrine can be detected in the serum as an indirect measure of the level of antipyrine in the body. 4-Hydroxyantipyrine has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth, with a high degree of specificity, by binding to bacterial p-450 enzymes and inhibiting their activity. This drug also has been shown to have a negative effect on human metabolism, leading to increased levels of serum bilirubin levels and increased urinary excretion of uric acid, which may lead to an increase risk for gouty arthritis.
