4-Nitrothiophenol is a chemical compound that is used in analytical chemistry as an indicator of the pH. 4-Nitrothiophenol is stable in alkaline solution and will change color depending on the pH level. The color change can be detected by eye or with a spectrophotometer. 4-Nitrothiophenol is also used to detect the presence of nitrite ions in solution, which can be used to identify the presence of nitrite-dependent bacteria such as Clostridium botulinum, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella enterica. This compound can be synthesized by reacting sodium hydroxide solution with nitrobenzene in the presence of hexapod or electron reduction. The reaction mechanism for this synthesis involves a hydroxide ion attack on the carbonyl group followed by an electrochemical reduction at the electrophilic carbon atom.
