Psicofuranine is a synthetic antimicrobial peptide that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the cell wall and inhibiting protein synthesis. It has been shown to be toxic in tissue culture and it is active against susceptible strains of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter cloacae. Psicofuranine has a pH optimum of 6.0-7.5 and is rapidly degraded in basic solutions such as hydrochloric acid or trifluoroacetic acid. Psicofuranine has been found to have pharmacokinetic properties similar to other antibiotics, with the exception of slower absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.
