Cambendazole is a benzimidazole compound that is used in the treatment of parasitic worms. It has been shown to be effective against a number of parasites, including cestodes, trematodes, and nematodes. Cambendazole inhibits the synthesis of proteins by binding to ribosomes (the sites of protein synthesis) and inhibiting protein synthesis. The drug has also been shown to inhibit the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain at concentrations as low as 1 ppm. This may be due to its ability to bind to DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, thereby preventing transcription and replication. Cambendazole has also been shown to have immunosuppressive properties.
