Hexadecyl chloroformate is a reactive aliphatic hydrocarbon that is used in organic synthesis as a chlorinating agent and an oxidizing agent. This compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of cervical cancer cells, but not squamous cell carcinoma cells, which may be due to its ability to cause DNA damage and induce cell death through oxidation. Hexadecyl chloroformate also inhibits the production of nitric oxide, a mediator of inflammation, by toll-like receptors. Hexadecyl chloroformate can be synthesized by reacting hexadecane with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of molybdenum catalyst at low temperatures (20°C). The yield for this reaction is about 50%.
