Somatostatin is a basic protein that belongs to the group of pharmacological agents. It is known for its ability to inhibit the release of certain hormones and other substances from endocrine glands. Somatostatin has been shown to be effective in treating bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome. It also has been used in the treatment of various hormonal disorders such as acromegaly and carcinoid syndrome. Somatostatin analogs are used in clinical trials for a variety of conditions including cancer, heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 2, and AIDS-related cachexia. Somatostatin receptors have been found in many tissues including the pancreas, stomach, small intestine, bladder, lung, kidney, liver and brain.
