N-(2,5-Dimethylphenyl)acetamide is a chemical compound with the molecular formula of C8H11N. It is a white solid that can be obtained through hydrogenation of 2,5-dimethylbenzaldehyde or alternatively by acetoxylation of 2,5-dimethylbenzoic acid. The yield of this compound is low and it has been shown to react with pyridine in the presence of hydrochloric acid to form 6-methoxyindole. This reaction is regioselective and yields two products, one from the methyl group and one from the benzene ring. In addition, N-(2,5-dimethylphenyl)acetamide has been shown to react with chloroform in dioxan to form an alcohol. This reaction was found to be biomolecular and may be used for the synthesis of other compounds.
