Valeraldehyde-2,4-DNPH is a fluorescent compound that is used as an on-line analytical probe for styrene. It interacts with the aldehydes in the styrene molecule and emits light when it is irradiated with UV light. The acidic nature of valeraldehyde-2,4-DNPH allows it to react with acetaldehyde and form an equilibrium mixture of carbonyl compounds. Acetonitrile can be used as a solvent to dissolve this compound and make it easier to use in chromatographic analysis. Valeraldehyde-2,4-DNPH has been used to identify fatty acids in nature and has also been found to have nitro groups that have not yet been characterized.
