1-Benzylpyrrolidine-2,5-dione is a reactive compound that can be synthesized from cyclopentanol and malic acid. It has been shown to bind to dna with high stereoselectivity. The sodium salts of this compound are stable in water and do not hydrolyze. 1-Benzylpyrrolidine-2,5-dione is an antiviral agent that has been shown to inhibit the activity of influenza A virus by binding to nucleobases in the viral genome. This compound also inhibits the replication of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) by binding to nucleotides in viral DNA and inhibiting nucleotide incorporation into viral DNA.
