Ammonium succinate is a reactive diammonium salt. It is a substrate for the enzyme succinic acid, which is used in the Krebs cycle to produce energy. Ammonium succinate plays an important role in plant physiology and as a neutralizing agent for acid rain. In some bacterial strains, ammonium succinate has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of succinic acid and malonic acid. This effect may be due to its ability to lower ATP levels, which are needed for anabolic reactions.
