5,6-Dichloro-2-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole is a potent uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation. The compound is a protonophore that passes through the outer membrane of mitochondria, where it interacts with hydrogen ions and protons to form free radicals. This interaction leads to the disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP synthesis, which in turn results in cell death. 5,6-Dichloro-2-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole has been shown to be effective against Escherichia coli K12 and mitochondria, as well as metabolic profiles in human erythrocytes.
