It is a colorless liquid that crystallizes in the form of needles. 2-Chlorocyclopent-1-ene-1-carbaldehyde has been shown to be activated by coordination or Vinylic chloride, which leads to its reactivity with other organic compounds. The crystal x-ray diffraction pattern of this compound shows that it has aldehyde groups in the molecule, which are responsible for its strong odor. This substance also reacts with phosphines and cycloalkenyl compounds to form chlorides and phosphine oxides.
