S-p-Tolyl p-Toluenesulfonothioate is a chemical that is a part of the class of sulfonylureas. It has been used as a reagent for the introduction of enolate groups and is also used in the synthesis of organic compounds. S-p-Tolyl p-Toluenesulfonothioate can be used in the preparation of compounds with active methylene groups, such as chlorides and disulfides. It can also be used in the synthesis of nitrates, thiosulfonates, and hydrogenates. The compound reacts with ammonium nitrate to form an enolate group that reacts with chloride to form an alkylsulfonyl chloride. The reaction mechanism for this process involves a nucleophilic attack by ammonia on the electrophilic carbon atom in the chloroform molecule followed by protonation to form an intermediate which then reacts with sulfur dioxide to form an ester
